Caption: Ultrasound physiotherapy. Hand of a physiotherapist uses ultrasound equipment to treat a woman patient. The patient is suffering from a haematoma (bruise) on the hip. The therapist uses a probe to pass high frequency sound (ultrasonic waves) into the muscles of the effected area. A clear gel is applied to the skin first to aid contact. A haematoma is a localised collection of blood caused by bleeding from a ruptured blood vessel. It is thought that the ultrasonic waves relax the muscles which hastens the healing process.
