Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Young cystic fibrosis patient coughing-up mucus following a session of "autogenic drainage", a physical technique for loosening mucus secretions in the lungs, during a teaching session involving her mother and a physiotherapist. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disorder that results in an overproduction of thick mucus, which obstructs the bronchi, intestinal glands & pancreas. Severe respiratory infections are a common complication. Advances in molecular genetics have resulted in the identification of the CF gene, and the development of diagnostic tests.
