Caption: Insulin injection. Diabetic girl self-injects insulin into her leg using a novopen. This pen- like dispenser, unlike a hypodermic syringe, contains insulin in portable cartridges and it meters the required dose. Diabetes mellitus is a carbohydrate metabolism disorder. It is a disease in which sugars in the body cannot be utilized to produce energy due to a lack of the pancreatic hormone insulin. These unused sugars accumulate in the blood and the urine. While fats which are used as an alternative energy source lead to a build-up of ketones in the blood that may eventually cause convulsions and diabetic coma. Treatment is based on a strict diet and the daily use of insulin.
