Caption: Human insulin for diabetes. Phials containing 10 millilitres of NPH insulin (at left) and Regular human insulin ('Humulin S'), with a hypodermic syringe. The 100 unit hypodermic syringe is used to deliver a measured dose to a diabetes mellitus patient. NPH or "isophane" is an intermediate acting insulin with a duration of 18-28 hours. It is extracted from beef pancreas. Regular human insulin is short-acting, made using recombinant DNA techniques. Regular human insulin is used in diabetic emergencies or as a preventative against hyperglycaemia after heavy meals. It is usually used in conjuction with an insulin such as NPH.
