Caption: Human insulin for diabetes. A phial containing 10 millilitres of NPH insulin, with a hypodermic syringe. The 100 unit hypodermic syringe is used to deliver a measured dose of insulin to a diabetes mellitus patient. NPH or "isophane" is an intermediate acting insulin with onset of 30 minutes and duration 18-28 hours. It may be used on a daily basis. It has been extracted from beef pancreas. Diabetes mellitus is a carbohydrate disorder in which sugars in the body are not metabolised, causing them to accumulate in the blood and urine. Treatment is based on a strict diet and the use of daily insulin injections.
