Caption: Insulin injection. Man self-injecting insulin into his abdomen using a Mixtard 30 Novolet pen, a type of novopen. This pen-like dispenser contains insulin in portable cartridges and meters the required dose. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder in which body sugars cannot be broken down due to a lack of the pancreatic hormone insulin. Unused sugars accumulate in the blood and the urine. The use of fats as an alternative energy source leads to a build-up of ketones in the blood that may cause convulsions and diabetic coma. Treatment involves a strict diet and daily use of insulin. In this case, biogenetically engineered human insulin is being used.
