Caption: Carpal tunnel syndrome treatment. Wrist of a 52- year-old woman two weeks after an operation to treat carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). This syndrome causes pain and weakness in the hand due to compression of the median nerve. Swelling in the wrist where the nerve enters the hand (the carpal tunnel) puts pressure on the nerve. Such swelling is common in women during pregnancy and the menopause. It may also result from injuries caused by repetitive movements. CTS can be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs and supportive splints. In severe cases, surgery to reduce the pressure on the nerve is performed. It may take several months for the nerve to heal after the operation.
