Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Cystic fibrosis treatment. Young boy breathing through a nebuliser in hospital. The nebuliser passes a fine mist into his lungs, which loosens the mucus that builds up due to the disease. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder that causes the over-production of a thick mucus in the lungs, amongst other symptoms. This obstructs the airways, causing breathing difficulties and an increased chance of lung infection. CF can be diagnosed by genetic study of a foetus before birth. There is no cure for the condition, although modern treatments can prolong life well into adulthood.
