Caption: Epilepsy treatment. Image 2 of 2. Surgeon implanting a neurocybernetic prosthesis (NCP) into a patient for the control of epilepsy. Epilepsy is a disorder of brain function in which the patient suffers seizures. The NCP implant works by stimulating the vagus nerve to diminish the frequency of epileptic attacks. A pacemaker-like control unit (silver, round) is implanted in the patient's chest beneath the collar bone. This is connected to two electrodes, which are placed around the vagus nerve at neck level. This surgery is usually conducted on an out-patient basis. See M725/375 for an image of the pacemaker before implantation.
