Caption: Aneurysm treatment. Coloured angiogram (blood vessel X-ray) of the treatment of a ruptured aneurysm in the internal carotid artery. The internal carotid artery carries blood to the head. A platinum coil (white, upper centre) is being inserted to block the flow of blood from the artery. This is a minimally invasive procedure, the coil is inserted via a small hole in an artery in the groin and then fed up to the neck. An aneurysm is a blood-filled dilation in a blood vessel. It is caused by a weakening of the vessel wall, which may be caused by hardening of the vessel (atherosclerosis), high blood pressure or injury. Haemorrhaging of an aneurysm can be fatal.
