Caption: Treatment of fungal infection. Illustration show- ing the point of action of antifungal drugs (blue arrows) in a fungal infection of the skin. The fungal hyphae (tubular filaments, green & yellow) can be seen growing in the epidermis. This may cause irritation and itching, and can be very contagious. One example is ringworm, caused by fungi such as Microsporum and Trichophyton which feed off the protein keratin found in skin. Antifungal drugs damage the cell walls of fungi, causing chemicals essential to normal cell function and growth to escape. This kills the fungus. Antifungal drugs are available as tablets, liquids, creams, injections and suppositories.
