Caption: colour enhanced frontal view of the skull in a person who has a ventricular shunt catheter (red tube) placed through their brain into one of the fluid filled structures (ventricles). This catheter (tube) is placed to drain the fluid (CSF or cerebral spinal fluid) when there is abnormal buildup of the fluid which is called hydrocephalus. This long catheter is tunnelled under the skin towards the abdomen. The other end of the catheter enters the peritoneal cavity of the abdomen where this fluid can be siphoned/diverted to relieve the hydrocephalus.
