Pinned backbone in osteoporosis, X-ray

Rights Managed

Pinned backbone in osteoporosis. Coloured X-ray of metal rods (white) supporting the lower (lumbar) part of a backbone that was collapsing due to osteoporosis. Pins extend from the rods into the backbone (some seen at lower left and right). Osteoporosis is a degenerative bone disease where bone density decreases, leading to bones that are brittle and liable to fracture. It is common in the elderly, especially in post-menopausal women.
