Caption: Tuberculosis treatment. Nurse giving a boy a drug to treat his tuberculosis (TB). The tablets of isoniazid, an anti-TB drug, are ground up and dissolved in tea or cola when they are given to children. Tuberculosis is caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterium, which grows into a primary tubercle (nodular lesion) when inhaled into the lungs. In some people, the disease may then spread to the lymph nodes. Tuberculosis is transmitted by coughing or sneezing. Symptoms include fever and weight loss, and the disease can be fatal. Photographed in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1999.
