Caption: Ulcer treatment with GM-CSF drug. Gloved hands inject a genetically engineered drug into an ulcer on the leg of a young man suffering from sickle cell anaemia. The drug is Granulocyte-macrophage Colony Stimulating Factor (GM-CSF); it is derived from human white blood cells. GM-CSF contains a factor which stimulates production of granulocyte and macrophage blood cells which fight infection and hence assist in healing the ulcer. Sickle cell anaemia is an inherited blood disease, primarily in black people, that forms abnormal haemoglobin. The resulting ulcer, seen here, is similar to the ulcers that may occur in patients with diabetes. GM-CSF drug can treat both types of ulcers.
