Sacral pressure ulcer treatment. Nurse cleaning the surrounding area after using gauze to pack a pressure ulcer on the sacral area of a 73-year-old woman immobilised by multiple sclerosis. This area, in the region of the sacrum, is where the upper buttocks meet the lower back. Pressure sores are caused by constant pressure and chafing of the skin in immobilised patients. They easily become infected, and enlarge and deepen over time. Treatment is with antibiotics and regular cleaning and dressing of the wound.
