Caption: Light micrograph of the meristem (growing region) of the root of an onion Allium sp. The cell walls clearly delineate the boxlike structure of the individual cells of the plant. The large blue stained ovals within most of the cells are nuclei, where the genetic material of the plant is stored. The meristem, being the region of active growth, also shows many cells in various stages of cell division or mitosis. In these cells the nuclei have broken down and what is visible are the chromosomes separating into two equal parts. Also typical of meristematic cells are the numerous vacuoles seen as white bodies. Magnification: x160 at 35mm size.
