Caption: Light micrograph of a transverse section through the root of a buttercup, Ranunculus sp., showing details of the vascular region, or stele. In the centre, arranged in the form of a cross, are the large empty xylem cells, their walls stained red. Between the arms of the cross at the edge of the circular stele are four groups of other cells, also red; these are the phloem. Beyond the stele lies the root cortex with its large cells containing red-stained starch particles. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 4.5, page 69.
