Lateral root growth

Lateral root growth

Rights Managed

Lateral root growth. Light micrograph of a transverse (cross) section through an unidentified root, showing lateral root growth. The lateral root is positioned diagonally across the frame. It originates from a vascular bundle (lower left) of the main root, penetrates the root cortex (at centre), and emerges through the root epidermis (upper right). In the centre of the lateral root can be seen conducting tissue (xylem vessels) which is continuous with xylem (large spaces) in the vascular bundle of the main root. Xylem transports water from the roots to the stem and leaves of the plant. Magnification: x14 at 35mm size & x26 at 5x7cm size.
