Caption: Carrot. Light micrograph of part of a thinly sliced section through a carrot (Daucus carota) root. A thin epidermis layer (dark orange) makes up the surface, surrounding the fleshy cortex. The inner core of a root is the stele (bottom right). This contains the vascular tissues, the xylem and phloem tissues that carry water and minerals, and nutrients respectively. Carrots are rich in the chemical beta-carotene that the body converts into retinol (vitamin A). Combined brightfield and darkfield illumination. Magnification: x9 at 6x7cm size.
