Caption: Poppy root. Light micrograph of the root of a poppy plant (Papaver sp.). The fine hairs serve to increase the surface area for water and nutrient absorption. The central part of the root contains its vascular system (red). This contains xylem and phloem tissues. Xylem is responsible for transporting water from the roots upwards to the rest of the plant. Phloem carries sugars from parts where it is produced, such as leaves, to parts where it is stored or required. Magnification: x70 when printed 10cm wide.
