Caption: Asparagus root. Light micrograph of a section through the central part of the root of an asparagus plant (Asparagus officinalis). The root contains vascular tissues, xylem (large blue areas) and phloem (smaller red vessels). Xylem is responsible for carrying water from the roots upwards to the rest of the plant. Phloem transports sugars between the plant's tissues, depending on where it is needed. Outside the vascular region are supporting cortex cells (pink, upper left). Magnification: x170 when printed 10cm wide.
