Caption: Acupuncture in addiction: use of a specialised ear needle in treating the compulsive behaviour of cigarette smoking. According to a traditional chinese philosophy, meridians (energy channels) run throughout the body. Mental & physical disorders are believed to arise from imbalances or blockages in this flow of energy. A small stud inserted into a meridian point in the ear is worn like an earring for a period of around 3 weeks. The point is stimulated periodically by attaching a plastic base which induces a small electric charge on the point when rotated, & assists energy flow in the meridian.
