Caption: Sande, Brosimum utile, is one of the commonest large trees in the coastal rain forests of Ecuador. It produces white latex which is characteristic of Moracaea, the family to which it belongs. Latex is a milky fluid which can be seen here running down the trunk; it contains proteins, starches, alkaloids, sugars, oils, tannins, resins and gums. Brosimum utile is much exploited for timber.
