Caption: Close-up view of the bark of the Cork Oak (Quercus suber). Q.suber is an evergreen tree which may live for 300 years and attain a height of 10 metres. It is native to the Iberian Peninsula, but is also cultivated in Algeria, Sardinia and the west coast of Italy. The bark is used in a variety of products, including stoppers, panels and coverings. The bark is first stripped when the tree is 25-30 years old, and every 10 years thereafter until the tree is 150 years old. Overcropping has led to the demise of many trees.
