Caption: Bark of the Scots Pine. Close up view of the deeply fissured bark of the Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris). The fissures between the scaly plates are filled by various species of lichen. P.sylvestris is a very common tree in northern Europe and in mountainous areas. It grows to a height of up to 40 metres in favourable conditions. Its timber is highly valued, being especially useful for carpentry, joinery and in the paper industry.
