Caption: Bark of the Scots Pine. Close up view of the deeply fissured bark of the Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris). The fissures between the scaly plates are filled by various species of pale-coloured lichen. P.sylvestris is a very common tree in northern Europe, and may also be found further south in mountainous areas. In favourable conditions it may grow to a height of up to 40 metres. Its timber is strong and easy to work, and is highly valued for use in carpentry, joinery and in the paper industry. Photographed in Scotland.
