Caption: Oak bark. Bark on the trunk of the Turkey oak tree, Quercis cerris. The bark of several species of oak contain tannins, chemicals used in the leather-tanning industry, and dyes. Bark is the hard outer covering or rind of a tree which protects the living wood beneath it. The Turkey oak is native to Asia Minor and southern Europe. It grows to 7.5-9 metres tall. Photographed in France.
