Caption: Kapok tree trunk. Close-up of the spiny trunk of the kapok, or silk cotton, tree (Ceiba pentandra). Bark protects the inner parts of the tree from damage, and this spiny layer also deters herbivores from feeding on the tree. The kapok is native to Africa, and is the largest tree on that continent, growing up to 50 metres tall. Photographed in Zambia.
