Caption: Scanning electron micrograph of a cross section through a white dead nettle stem, Lamium album. The stem is square with the vascular bundles (xylem & pholem, liquid conducting vessels) halfway inside each corner. The tissue inside the square corners is the collenchyma, a strengthening layer with thick primary walls. A band of collenchyma (linking the vascular bundles) forms a near continuous layer around the stem, separating the cortex (outer) from the pith (inner). The pith consists of large empty cells, which degenerate as the stem grows, producing a central cavity. Pith cells are thin walled with air spaces between them. Mag: X55 (10x8).
