Caption: Polarised Light micrograph of a section through a twig of the common lime tree, Tilia X europaea, in the region of an annual growth ring. The micrograph also shows the system of medullary rays. The medullary rays, the solid lines dividing this micrograph, are radial extensions of the pith. They penetrate the vascualr bundles, or water conducting xylem cells, which are seen here as large, red-coloured holes. The cells surrounding the xylem are parenchyma cells. These cells form a ground tissue in which other tissue, such as the xylem here, are embedded. Magnification: x40 at 35mm size.
