Caption: Sperm sample. A technician injects a sample of donated human sperm into a test tube to prepare it for freezing in a sperm bank. Donor sperm is used to help infertile couples have babies by in vitro fertilisation, where the mother's eggs are fertilised in a laboratory. The donor sperm is mixed with various substances to prevent cell damage during freezing. It is then sealed in a tube and immersed in liquid nitrogen, which preserves it indefinitely at -180 degrees C.
