In vitro fertilisation: egg injected with sperm

Rights Managed

In vitro fertilisation. Researcher using a microscope connected to a video monitor carries out in vitro fertilisation (IVF). At left is a TV screen with a microscopic view of a circular human egg (ovum) which is being injected with a sperm cell. A needle (not visible) introduces the sperm into the egg. A pipette (at left of egg) is used to hold the egg steady while the needle is inserted. Once fertilised, the resulting embryo is implanted into the female uterus to develop to term. The technique ensures penetration of the egg, without wasting millions of sperm. IVF has been used successfully worldwide to treat infertile couples.
