Caption: Scanning electron micrograph of a vertical section through balsa wood, the wood (secondary xylem) of the tree Ochroma lagopus. The two large, vertical structures are tracheary vessels carrying water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves. The sections making up the vessels are large, elongated cells which have lost their end walls & form a tube. The walls of these vessel elements are speckled with pores (called pits) which allow the exchange of substances with adjacent cells. The elongated, air-filled chambers surrounding the vessels are fibres; strong sclerenchyma cells with thickened walls which support and strengthen the tree. Magnification: x50 at 8x10" size.
