Caption: Scanning electron micrograph of the snapped horizontal face of a piece of balsa wood, the wood (secondary xylem) of the tree Ochroma lagopus. The large cavity at centre right is the broken end of a tracheary vessel which carrys water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves. The air- filled chambers which surround it are fibres; strong sclerenchyma cells with thickened walls which support and strengthen the tree. Magnification: x180 at 8x10" size.
