Caption: Scanning electron micrograph of a horizontal section through oak heartwood, the wood (secondary xylem) of the tree Quercus robur. The circular holes (both large & small) are the cut ends of tracheary vessels which have become blocked by bladder-like ingrowths known as tyloses. In young sapwood the vessels carry water & nutrients from the roots to the leaves, but after a few years they become blocked & no longer carry sap. The large vessels occur in early (spring) wood, the smaller ones in late wood. The two bands of compact tissue running from left to right (centre & bottom) are broad rays. Oak is classified as a hardwood. Magnification: x70 at 8x10 inch size.
