Caption: Light micrograph of a transverse section through a yew tree (Taxus sp. ) twig, showing the outer corky layers (cortex, phellogen & phellem). The outermost layer, the epidermis, is visible as a brown, convoluted line, sections of which appear at bottom right, top right, and top left. The rows of smaller cells seen at bottom left belong to concentric layers of nutrient-conducting phloem (green) and sap-conducting xylem (pink). The circular structure with a pink xylem core, seen near the centre of the image, is probably a side- shoot; the twig has been sectioned at the point where a side-shoot branched off from the main twig. Magnification: x36 at 35mm size.
