Caption: Light micrograph of a transverse section through a young maize (Zea mays) stem, showing the scattered arrangement of the vascular bundles (pink & green discs). This arrangement is typical of the Monocotyledons. Each vascular bundle contains xylem cells, which conduct sap upwards from the roots, and phloem cells, which ditribute the carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis in the leaves. The tissue surrounding the bundles (green) is known as ground parenchyma. Magnification: x36 at 35mm size.
