Caption: Light micrograph of a transverse section through the almost square stem of the hedge woundwort plant, Stachys sylvatica. The centre of the stem is occupied by a region of large-celled medullary parenchyma tissue known as the pith. Around this is a ring of vascular tissue (yellow). A large vascular bundle is seen at each of the corners and smaller vascular bundles are also discernable along the sides. The brown spongy outer layer is the cortex (cortical parenchyma). This is strengthened at each of the corners by a denser region of collenchyma tissue, which serves to support the stem. Magnification: x4 at 35mm size.
