Caption: Light micrograph of a transverse section through a young ash stem, Fraxinus sp.. The stem is composed of concentric layers of different types of tissue. Starting from the centre and working outwards these are: the pith or medullary parenchyma (blue, large-celled, centre), xylem (pink with fibrous appearance), cambium (thin white layer), phloem (dark band), phloem fibres (broken pink band), cortex (large-celled blue tissue), cork (dark band) and, finally, the epidermis (thin outer "skin"). Magnification: x4 at 35mm size.
