Caption: Light micrograph of a radial longitudinal section through the wood (secondary xylem) of the Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris. The vertical tube-like structures are tracheids. In softwoods like pine, these provide structural support and also carry out sap-conducting functions. The walls of the tracheids are marked by lines of tiny holes, known as border pits, which allow the exchange of substances between adjacent cells. The dark, horizontal feature at upper right is a ray, part of the vascular system concerned with the radial transport of materials. Magnification: x200 at 35mm size.
