Caption: Yew wood. Light micrograph of a transverse section through wood of the Yew tree, Taxus baccata. Here, tracheids (non-living xylem) are seen across an annular ring. This is an annual growth ring of the Yew. In each ring, the cells become gradually smaller until the dense line signifies winter (lower centre), followed by a rapid change to large cells of spring. The Yew tree is a "coneless conifer", being an evergreen gymnosperm widely distributed throughout Europe. It is a very long lived tree, sometimes credited with ages of 2000 years. Illuminated by crossed polars. Magnification: x200 at 35mm size.
