Caption: Petiole of leaf. Light micrograph of a transverse (cross) section through a petiole of the carrot, Daucus carota. The petiole is the stalk of a leaf. Here, vascular bundles (purple) are seen scattered in the parenchyma tissue of the cortex. In the outer region of the cortex, beneath the surface epidermis, are semi-circular bands of thick-walled collenchyma cells which strengthen the petiole. Vascular bundles consist of conducting cells: phloem (yellow) which transports carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis in the leaf; xylem vessels (purple) that conduct water from the swollen root of the carrot to the leaves. Magnification: x6 at 35mm size.
