Caption: Petiole of leaf. Light micrograph of a transverse (cross) section through a petiole of the lilac, Syringa sp. The petiole is the stalk of a leaf. Here, a central vascular bundle is seen within the parenchyma tissue (brown) of the cortex. Black regions in the outer cortex contain thick-walled collenchyma cells which strengthen the petiole. The vascular bundle consist of conducting cells: phloem (black band) which transports carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis in the leaf; xylem vessels (yellow, inside the phloem) that conduct water. External to the phloem are thick-walled bands of sclerenchyma (yellow) which support the vascular bundle. Magnification: x14 at 35mm size.
