Caption: Vascular bundle. Light micrograph of a transverse (cross) section through a vascular bundle in a woody dicotyledon stem. At centre, the vascular bundle is embedded in parenchyma cells (white) that make up the cortex of the stem. Within the vascular bundle, rows of large xylem vessels (black with white interior) serve to conduct water from roots up through the stem. Phloem (pink, lower centre) transports carbohydrates and other nutrients from the leaves down the stem. At lower frame, thick-walled cells (black) are scleren- chymatous fibres that serve to support and strengthen the vascular bundle. Magnification: unknown.
