Caption: Stem of Grape Vine. Light micrograph of a transverse (cross) section through the stem of a Grape Vine, Vitis vinifera. This is a typical dicotyledonous stem of a climbing plant. The outer cortex (grey) is narrow; most of the stem contains the "wheel-like" stele of conducting tissues. Sclerenchyma tissue (yellow semi-circles) serve to strengthen the stele. Phloem cells (white) occur within the black ring; internal to the phloem are large xylem vessels (black on green). Phloem conducts nutrients from leaves down the stem; xylem transports water from the roots upwards. There is a central pith containing large cells. Magnification: x9 at 35mm size.
