Caption: Maize stem. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a transverse section through a stem of the maize plant (Zea mays). The edge of the section is seen here. The large cells over most of the frame are the medullary and cortical parenchymal cells. Here and there are small round groups of tiny cells, each with three larger cells. These are the vascular bundles; the larger cells are the metaxylem vessels and the tiny cells are sclerenchymal, phloem parenchymal or xylem parenchymal cells. The layer of small cells at top right is the stem epidermis. Magnification x20 at 6x4.5cm size.
