Caption: Hibiscus stem. Light micrograph (LM) of a transverse section through a Hibiscus sp. stem. At centre is a circle of pith (dark blue), surrounded by two larger circles (light purple) containing the xylem (small dark blue dots). The xylem is composed of vertical tube-like cells which conduct sap upwards from the roots. Nutrients are supplied to the outer tissue by the vascular rays radiating outwards from the pith. The rays pass through the cambium (outer white ring) into the phloem which is striped with phloem fibres. The phloem distributes carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis in the leaves. Magnification unknown.
