Caption: Caesarean delivery of a baby. The operation is not normally carried out before the 28th week of gestation and is performed when there are risks to the baby or mother from natural childbirth. Such risks include: that the baby is too large to pass through the vagina, that it is showing signs of lack of oxygen (anoxia), or it is in a breech position that cannot be turned. Diathermy is being used to cauterise the small blood vessels around the initial incision into the abdominal wall.
