Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Caesarean section. A surgeon lifts a baby's head through an incision in its mother's abdomen during a caesarean section operation. Caesarean section is performed when it is impossible or dangerous to deliver the baby vaginally. The mother is given a local anaesthetic (epidural) that numbs pain but allows her to remain conscious during the birth. The scar left by the operation is unobtrusive and lies below the bikini line. About 25% of US babies and 10% of UK babies are born by caesarean section. Photographed at the Academic Medical Centre in the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
